Best way to put a stone veneer over a dated brick fire place? Mortar direct on brick or use lath first ?

We wanna put a a cultured stone or slate veneer over our dated brick 
shank
fireplace.Would it be best to mortar directly on the brick or nail lath

onto the brick surface first and then put a mortar coat onthe lath...or

You have the right idea, I would use some tap-con screws and

attach the backer board to the brick and existing mortar. And then set
